Picking the Best Type of Carpet for Your New Flooring Installation

With so many different types of carpets available, how do you know which is the best choice for your needs? Here we review different fibers and styles of carpeting to help you decide!

Carpet Fibers
  • Nylon – The most popular carpet fiber which is also the strongest and the most durable. Often used by people who have pets and children and is perfect for heavy traffic areas like hallways and stairs.
  • Polyester – Known for its luxurious look and feel, polyester offers a large selection of colors and styles. It offers superior stain and fade resistance and is a good value for homes with a normal amount of traffic.
  • Olefin – A less expensive option that repels UV rays, offers stain and moisture resistance, and is resistant to moisture, mold, and mildew. This makes a good choice for basement areas and the outdoors.
  • Wool – The premier carpeting fiber, wool is the only natural fiber made into carpeting. It is favored for its natural beauty, and provides excellent durability with a soft, luxurious feel. It has natural soil resistance qualities but is not inherently stain resistant.

Carpet Styles

  • Saxony/Cut Pile – Is a popular option that offers a smooth surface and traditional look. It is a good choice for high-traffic areas including living rooms and hallways. The fibers are longer and twisted to add body.
  • Plush - Plush starts out as a loop which are then cut, resulting in a nice, soft texture perfect for tired feet and toes. Plush is the most frequently chosen residential carpet. It is commonly used in rooms which are traditional or very formal, like dining rooms or family rooms and bedrooms as well.
  • Frieze – Offers a modern, casual, and stylish look paired with great durability. It has long fibers and is not recommended for high-traffic areas but can be used in bedrooms, sitting rooms, and media rooms.
  • Berber – Features short loops that stand up very well in high-traffic areas. It is extremely durable and can be used in recreational rooms, basements, family rooms, and workout rooms.
  • Pattern or Cut & Loop/Sculptured – Combines the best qualities of both cut pile and loop pile fibers and offers a stunning visual impact. This type of carpet is good for hiding dirt or stains and is recommended for formal rooms, dining rooms and basements.
